Biographical Notes:
The father is African-American, the mother is Italian. Mya was raised in Maryland. She began taking dance lessons in 1982 specializing in ballet, jazz and tap. At the age of 8 Mya lost interest in dance. But the love for music remains so she took violin lessons in the fourth grade. Mya returned to dance in 1992. She studied tapes of tap prodigy Savion Glover and joined the dance troupe T.W.A. (Tappers With Attitude). She left the group soon to study at the legendary Dance Theater of Harlem with Glover.
By age 15, Mya musical career beganwith the help of her father, a professional musician performing in R&B bands. At 16 Mya had her own recording contract. The first album, "Mya" was released in April 1998 (double platinum) followed by "Fear of Flying". She was nominated for Best New R&B/Soul or Rap Artist and Best Female R&B/Soul Album for the 1999 Soul Train Awards.
